A concrete cloth or concrete canvas is a flexible concrete saturated fabric that hardens when hydrated to form a thin, sturdy, waterproof, and fire-resistant layer.
It is the ground-breaking materials technology that permits the construction of concrete shelters with the help of water and air in lesser time.
Here we will learn about concrete cloth, advantages & disadvantages of concrete canvas, much more.
Introduction to concrete cloth:
Concrete cloth is solid roll to position and cut with the hand tools and spray it with water.
Concrete canvas arises in a box, might be deployed by 2 people in 1 hour with no training, and can be used within 24 hours.
They come in two sizes, 25 and 54 square meters of floor space with a range of applications such as disaster relief or emergency infrastructure.
Why concrete cloth is preferred:
- It combines the flexibility of geotextile fabrics with the durability of hardened concrete.
- It consists of a dry concrete mixture within a 3-dimensional fiber matrix.
- The fibrous surface on one side and a PVC membrane on the other side.
- When water is poured it remains workable for two hours then hardens into the concrete sheet.
Advantages of concrete cloth:
1. Portable: They are easy to hold, transport and set without any special tools.
2. Speedy: It can be either hydrated by spraying concrete cloth or immersing it completely in water, once hydrated it remains effective for up to 4 hours, becoming 80% stronger within 24 hours.
3. Easy to use: Dried solid cloth could be lower or darned using easy hand tools, it could be simply fixed or upgraded with the help of cement products.
4. Flexible: It could be simply handled or anchored before setting.
5. Strong: Fiber reinforcement provided to stop cracks, absorb energy from impacts and supply a steady failure mode.
6. Waterproof: The PVC on the floor ensures that the concrete cloth is completely waterproof.
7. Hydration: Hydration can be reduced by filling the sack with the water, it is aided by the fibre matrix helping with water content in the cement.
8. Setting: The concrete fabric fixes the shape of the bottom structure on which it is positioned and ready for construction use after 24 hours.
9. Adaptable: Concrete cloth is the moment plated on a 1.2 m wide roll, however could be made with the width up to 5 m; fabrics could be produced within the range of thickness from 5–20 mm.
10. Durable: Concrete cloth is chemically resistant and will not degrade in UV.
11. Fireproof: Concrete cloth is a ceramic-based material and it will not burn.
Disadvantages of Concrete cloth:
1. Concrete fabrics cannot be hydrated and water excess is always recommended.
2. Do not immediately pour high-pressure water on the concrete fabric as this may cause a channel to be washed away within the materials.
3. After hydration, the concrete cloth has a working time of 1-2 hours.
4. Working time will likely be decreased in a hot climate.
5. If the concrete material is not fully saturated, it may delay and strength may be reduced.
Application of concrete Canvas:
Pitch Linings:
Protects from the water that seeps into the ditch, it is much faster and less expensive than conventional concrete.
Slip Protection:
Concrete canvas can be used in various erosion management purposes such as slope stabilization and non-permanent and permanent slope protection.
Pipeline Safety:
The concrete cloth can be used as a coating for overland or submerged pipelines.
Provides protection against corrosion and direct impact on pipes, providing a better hard rock shield.
In remote areas, this coat steel pipe can be used on-site for applications without wet concrete.
Mining Application:
It can be used as a substitute for pouring or spraying concrete material or fast method of the strong permanent or temporary blast.
It supplies value savings of over 20% in comparison with conventional solutions.
Bund lining:
Earth’s paved bale will soon be attached to the concrete material to offer an environmentally friendly, chemically resistant alternative to the concrete wall.
It is a secondary containment system that is generally used to guard the surroundings against spreading where the chemical substances are stored.
Concrete Canvas Shelter:
Concrete canvas shelters are one of many major uses of concrete material, they are quickly organized and require only water and air for the building.
The Concrete cloth shelters (CCS) are more operational and financial then conventional tent shelters.
They provide an inflexible construction from a really quick operation, also much better environmental safety, security and medical capability.
Gabion Repair:
The Gabion is a cage, cylinder, or box filled with rocks, concrete, sand, and clay used for road construction and marine purposes.
Gabion wall can be used for dams or in concrete material to restraint or repair.
Covering the gabion with solids also prevents water entrance that can cause deceleration and protecting the geotextile membrane from the effects of UV corrosion.
Dust Suspension:
Turbulent air created by helicopter rotor wash drives loose soil particles into the air.
Dust particles flying in the air negatively affect humans & wildlife, aquatic life and vegetation.
Dust vehicles, helicopters, and equipment increase damage due to mechanical friction thus concrete material is used as a suspension of sludge around helicopter landing sites.
Sandbag Repair:
It has been confirmed to prevent sandbag erosion, exhaust muzzle fly ash, and environmental risks from frequent incoming fires.
There is greater than 5500 square meter presently being used by the British Army in Afghanistan.

Conclusion:
The concrete cloth has unique proprietary material, it is a time saving technique.
In addition, allow concrete construction without the need for a plant or mixing equipment, concrete cloth design life is 10 years specially used where workmanship is very difficult.
