Stair Landing

A stair Landing is an area of a floor near the top or bottom step of a stair. An intermediate landing is a small platform built as parts of a stairway between main floor levels and is typically used to allow the stairs to change direction, or to allow the user to rest.

Often, the stairway lobbies also have fire break entrances (normally closed) and lift doors, so it will be suitable to place them in landing codes of specified dimensions for safety reasons.

Introduction to stair landing:

Stair landing is normally provided for safety reasons, i.e. intermediary points, for breaking long straight flights at the change of directions and at points of entry/exit.

In addition, they can serve as intermediate points of refuge for wheelchairs in emergency evacuation situations as well as being properly designed to allow for normal evacuation space.

The fire access and hose reel cupboard will also affect the size and shape of the stair landing.

Other manifestation such as coloured nosing and tactile strips for the visually impaired may be incorporated on landings to mark the start of the downstairs flight.

Stair landing dimensions:

  • The maximum height of the riser is between 150mm 200mm.
  • The minimum tread length should be 250mm to 300mm.
  • The length of the step is should provide a minimum of 600mm.
  • The handrail height should be provided a minimum of 1m for the staircase.
  • The width of the stair landing slab will be provided at least 1000 mm for the walkover on the staircase.

In which cases, stair landing are needed:

Stair landings should be provided at the top and bottom of each flight of external and internal stairs.

A landings are required, where a gate at the top of the stair flight rotates towards the ladder.

For straight-run ladders that exceed a total rise of 3.65 m, an intermediate landing should be provided.

In which cases, stair landing are not needed:

If an entrance located at the top of stairs in a housing unit, it has a swing away from the landings between the stair and the door is not required.

It is possible for a single housing unit to leave the landings on top of a stair serving a secondary entrance, provided that the stairs do not have more than three cracks and the door does not slip or swing away from the stairs.

The stairs landing at the bottom of outdoor stairs may be neglected, provided that there is no obstruction for the stairs serving less than the width of the stairs or 900 mm and a single housing unit serving 1100 mm for the stairs is not served.
